When to apply · the honest calendar
The Dubai school admissions timeline
Every school sets its own dates — but the rhythm of the market is consistent, and knowing it is the difference between choosing a school and taking what’s left.
September–October · applications open
Most UK, US and IB schools open applications for the following August around now. Popular Outstanding and Very Good schools fill fastest — for some year groups, within weeks. If you know you’re moving next summer, this is your moment, a full year ahead.
October–January · assessments
Age-appropriate and rarely fearsome: play-based observation in the early years, short literacy/numeracy or CAT4-style assessments higher up, sometimes a family conversation. Schools are checking fit and placement — see which year group applies.
January–March · offers and deposits
Offers typically require a deposit to hold the place — usually deducted from first-term fees. Read the refund terms before paying, especially if you’re holding places at more than one school. Budget the full year with the true cost calculator, not just tuition.
April–June · waitlist season
Dubai’s churn is your friend: families relocate out and lists move, sometimes dramatically, right up to August. A “waitlisted” in March is often a place by June — stay in polite, regular contact with the registrar.
The Indian-curriculum track runs differently
CBSE/ICSE schools follow an April–March year: admissions season typically runs November–January for an April start. Plan relocation timing around this — it’s the single most common surprise for families arriving from India.
Arriving mid-year?
Completely normal here — relocation churn means in-year places open constantly, even at strong schools. Contact registrars directly rather than trusting a website’s “full” notice, and check the newest campuses, which usually have the most space in their first years.
Tier reality, plainly. The most sought-after Outstanding schools carry genuine waiting lists in popular year groups; many Good-rated schools — including excellent-value ones — can offer places quickly. A rating is one input; fit is the decision.
