Nurseries and early years in Dubai: the question before school

School guides start at FS1 — but your family’s journey starts earlier. Here is how Dubai’s early years actually work, the two roads into school, and what to look for with your own eyes.

How it’s organised

Dubai’s private nurseries operate as licensed early childhood centres under KHDA’s oversight, separately from schools. Most follow a published framework — the British EYFS is the most common — and fees vary widely with hours, age and area, so compare per-term quotes like-for-like, registration fees included.

The two roads into school

Road one: standalone nursery, then school at FS1 or KG. Maximum choice and often gentler settings for the youngest children. Under the new admissions rule, a child who turns three by 31 December can join FS1 that August — check the year-group chart for your child. Road two: a school’s own foundation stage from age three. Continuity, siblings together, and often priority — but ask the exact question: “does a nursery or FS1 place here guarantee progression, or only priority?” Get the answer in writing; the difference matters at oversubscribed schools.

What to look at with your own eyes

1. Ratios and the room. How many adults for how many children of your child’s age — and do the children look engaged or managed?
2. Outdoor space and shade. A Dubai-specific question: where do children play in October, and where in May?
3. Settling policy. Good settings expect a gradual start and welcome parents in it; “drop them and go” on day one is a flag.
4. Staff turnover. Ask directly. Continuity of the person who greets your child each morning is the whole product.
5. Safeguarding, plainly. Ask who leads it and how concerns are raised — confident settings answer without flinching.
6. The full cost. Term fees plus registration plus hours realistically needed — then test the family total in the calculator alongside older siblings.
